Priority  P.E Strand for improvement 2022

As part of the Active School Flag process, we at Naul N.S choose a strand of P.E learning each year and focus on improving how we teach lessons in that strand.

We aim to improve the learning opportunities and experiences provided to the children. Each year we choose another strand to develop and improve upon.

In 2019/20 we worked on Aquatics and we introduced Swimming lessons from 3rd to 6th classes.

In 2020/21 we worked on Dance.

This year (2021/22) we have decided to focus on Outdoor and Adventure activities.

The Curriculum strand Outdoor and Adventure activities is timetabled for May and June.

This strand includes walking, orienteering, following simple plans, adventure trails, obstacle courses and co-operative (trust) activities.

The teacher’s have been using the recommended PSSI lessons. These are well structured, interesting lessons with clear instructions and useful resources.

The lessons are readily accessible to teacher’s and organised in class packs for each class level.

This revised and well organised system will ensure that each year when Outdoor and Adventure Activities are being covered that all the resources are already prepared and ready to go.

There are also a wide range of Walkway Activities at hand to provide plenty of variety and inter-curricular links in learning whilst partaking in physical activity.

Sufficient number’s of new clipboards were purchased to allow for pair work and teamwork.

3rd and 4th class doing a Scavenger Hunt

The children work in pairs or small groups. They take part in activities which encourage teamwork, communication and problem solving.

Orienteering

As the children follow instructions and travel between control points to find clues and answer questions, they fit in plenty of walking and running outdoors in the fresh air.

Outdoor and adventure challenges involve problem solving and making decisions with your team.

These are life skills which the children learn in a fun, interactive and interesting way.

The children also observe their environment and the nature around them whilst problem solving and communicating with their team mates.

The school tour to Clara Lara had plenty of outdoor and adventure activities!

The children had the freedom to explore the park and had a wonderful experience trying out the wide range of adventure activities.

The park really is like one huge obstacle course!

!

We had 2 giant Bouncy Obstacle courses on our Fun Day. This provided a fun physical challenge to the children.

Céilí Dancing for Seachtain na Gaeilge and in Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day 2022

The children in 3rd and 4th class, and the 5th and 6th class practised and rehearsed the “Siege of Ennis” céilí dance with their teachers separately.

For two weeks the children practiced their dancing with a view to performing in an outdoor céilí with the 4 classes combined together. They did a couple of rehearsals together. Ms. Moore, Mr. Duggan and Julie did a fantastic job preparing the children for their first school céilí.

The children did a great job learning all the dance moves. This took great enthusiasm, effort and coordination from them all.

It was a fun learning experience taking part in a group dance and great skill to remember all the different moves in time with each other and the music.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming Lessons are beginning again in Aura Leisure Centre for 4th, 5th and 6th classes on March 2nd.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn how to swim with their peers.

P.E. Lessons

Over the coming weeks the children will participate in a variety of taster sessions of games in their P.E lessons.

Soccer, basketball, tennis and hockey will be experienced by every class.

The children worked on their ball handling skills and hand-to-eye coordination skills.

Strand – Aquatics

For the previous 2 years Naul N.S enabled the children to access the Aquatics strand of the Curriculum providing the children the opportunity to attend swimming lessons in Aura, Drogheda during the school day.

This was hugely beneficial to the children.

Active Break In Class

Here are some children enjoying an active break in class.

The children love dancing to Go Noodle and Just dance. They learn dance moves demonstrated on the Interactive Whiteboard.

This gives the children a well earned movement break and re-energizes them for their next lesson.
