Here are the Active Line Leaders leading their classes through a range of exercises.

This maximises the way we use our time in order to promote physical activity throughout the school day.

Outdoor and Adventure Activities May 2022

Horseriding

The children from Áthas and Sonas have been going horseriding once a week.

The children are really enjoying the experience.

Horseriding is good for posture, balance and coordination.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience such a lovely sport as well as developing an appreciation of animals and the environment.

The Daily Mile Running Challenge

The Curriculum strand outdoor and Adventure activities is timetabled for May and June.

We will be working on improving our delivery of lessons in Outdoor and Adventure activities.

It is a perfect time of year to make great use of our Walkway at the back of the school (around the football pitch).

In May we did The Mile a Day Running Challenge.

The children were encouraged to jog or run their mile.

The children in every class participated.

Fyffes Fit Schools 2021/2022

The school is currently participating in a competition run by Fyffes banana company called ‘Fyffes Fit Schools’.

The aim of this competition is to find Ireland’s fittest school. They are partnered with elite Irish athletes David Gillick and Phil Healy.

Fyffes gives exercise demos and online workouts. Feeling up for a challenge at home? – you can also find these workout sessions on YouTube if you search ‘Fyffes fit squad’, but be ready to get moving!!

Each week we complete a number of exercises and our progress is sent to Fyffes online, they look for how many exercises we have done, and what percentage of the school took part. This is then converted into ‘Banana Points’.

Thankfully, due to our great efforts at Active Schools to date, it was easy to implement a few different exercises from Fyffes to our routine. After small break and big lunch, each class takes part. We are really enjoying this challenge and are seeing our progress on the leader board as we earn banana points each week!

Classes performing a Fyffes workout in class.

Each person had three shots.

Lots of hand to eye coordination and good aiming was necessary for this challenge.

There was lots of cheering and good sportsmanship displayed by all!

Ms.Moore’s team scored the most hoops. Well done!

P.E and Physical Activity in Naul N.S.

Before School closures  due to Covid-19 last March we were involved in numerous activities to enhance the provision of P.E and physical activity in Naul N.S.

We also provided plenty of opportunities for increased Physical Activity for the children including P.E and Health Homework (Super Troopers Health Homework Journal by Laya Healthcare).

To learn more about some of the activities and initiatives we successfully completed last year, view the Powerpoint on Active School’s for a summary of the work done towards the Active School Flag prior to 2021.

We completed a slogan/poster competition prior to lockdown.

The slogan we chose was “Be Wise, Exercise!”.

Here are a selection of some of the other wonderful and imaginative slogans and

posters created by children throughout the whole school:

Active Break Every Day

For the month of October we did the Active Break every day challenge. This was greatly enjoyed by the children .who experienced a variety of different activity breaks daily throughout the week. This increase in physical activity leads to increased motivation, energy and concentration on return to class lessons as well as a stronger fit body!

Active School Team

Many of the children are taking great initiative in contributing new ideas and volunteering to do jobs to help keep the Active School’s process interesting and to help keep it running effectively.

Every child and staff member is involved in this process.

We are all part of the Active School Team in Naul N.S and everyone’s input and help is valued.

Walk/Jog Every Day

Every class is committed to doing a walk/ jog every day for the month of May.

This is linked to our walk/ jog around Europe Challenge.

In June we will continue the challenge but more children may decide to jog or run instead of walking.

Every class in the school will be taking part in the Walk around Europe Walking/ Jogging Challenge for the month of May. Every day the children will walk or jog laps of the yard.

Each lap equates to a mile. We will total the number of miles walked/ jogged daily on a class chart. At the end of the month we will see which country each class walked nearest to.

Active School Committee

Here is our Active school committee. They do a fantastic job!

They attend Active School meetings with Ms. Kelly and pass the information onto to their teacher and class regarding updates and new initiatives related to Active School’s.

An important role of the Active School Leader’s is to keep their class  physically active in their lines after breaktime just before returning to class.

They perform/ demonstrate exercises and count steadily as the class lines perform each exercise.

This ensures that time is used wisely to keep as physically active as possible at school, so that the children can achieve the 60 minutes of Physical Activity recommended by the HSE.

Brain Break

Here are children “Doing their Walking while they’re Talking”.

Not only are they getting in their steps, but they are having a well deserved “Brain Break” from their academic studies.

Active Break Every Day Challenge

In April, all classes took part in the Active Break Every day Challenge.

Each class chose an active break daily which was either an exercise break, a walking break (laps of the yard) or a dance break.

Each Teacher recorded which break they did daily on a chart.

The children really enjoyed this challenge. It kept them fit, energized and gave them a well earned movement break!
